Zynga city building game coming soon? Survey says … maybe

Playdom’s Social City has been gaining users by the millions in a matter of days, and competitor Zynga has taken note. According to ISG , Zynga has published a survey on Facebook which asks two specific questions about the hot city buidling game — “How frequently do you currently play Social City?” and “Into which of the following ranges does your current Social City level fall?” Zynga currently does not have any ‘city’ names trademarked (though we’re interested in seeing how soon Zynga launches a hotel themed game, since they have the names HotelVille and Hotel World trademarked), but if those surveyed say they spend lots of time playing Social City — we’re certain a Zynga city building game will be on its way soon.

Zynga Poker is social in a way that most games on Facebook or not. The average Facebook game lets you interact with your friends through the occasional visit to their virtual home, or by hiring a picture of their avatar to work for you, or by letting you compare your high score with theirs, or one of a thousand other indirect interactions between you and other players. In Zynga Poker, on the other hand, you’re actually sitting at a table with friends and strangers, battling for virtual chips in real time.

As most Facebook gamers can attest, the bite-sized games that live on Facebook are just that — bite-sized. It’s easy to sit down and play them for 15 minutes, and just as quickly go about your normal lives. There’s also not a whole lot of depth to these games — in FarmVille, you plant crops and harvest them to earn coins and experience points, then move on to Mafia Wars, you go on missions to earn cash and experience points.
FarmVille wins Best New Social/Online Game at the Game Developer Choice Awards

At the 2010 Game Developer Choice Awards, FarmVille wins the award for the Best New Social/Online game. The farming game from Zynga has 83 million monthly active players and has more than double the players than the second most popular Facebook game — also by Zynga — Cafe World. This was the first year for this category, which is a testament to how big Facebook and other online playable games have grown over the past year.

Far from being a threat to gaming, Segerstrale sees the move towards free social games as the key to unlocking explosive growth. Outspoken Hi5 President Alex St. John put the smackdown on Zynga today during a talk at the 2010 Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, calling the popular social gaming outfit ‘mediocre’ and a ‘company that has primarily just found a new way to spam people.’ Them’s fighting words, especially as the social network is making big moves to ramp up its status as a gaming platform, going so far as to dub itself “the largest social entertainment site focused on gaming.” A quick peek on the official Zynga site shows that neither FarmVille, Mafia Wars nor any other Zynga games currently reside on Hi5 — and based on these comments from Alex St
